Don’t get into a career just for the money. When you focus strictly on the paycheck and not the work itself, you’re setting yourself up for disaster. It’s almost guaranteed that you’re going to spend the money you make, no matter how much that is. Making more is nice, but it’s not the only goal you should have.
Instead of focusing on the raw numbers of the paycheck, look for a career that genuinely interests you. While you want to make enough money to cover your bills and do some fun things on the weekend, you also want to have a job you like working at. If you’re dreading getting out of bed to do your work, then you need to switch careers.
You’re the one living your life and doing your work. Unless someone else is literally paying for your every expense, they don’t get a say in how you organize your life. Often, parents or family can put expectations on you for the kind of career they want to see you in. Maybe your relatives want you to be a doctor or a lawyer just like others in the family.
However, you need to pick your career out for yourself. You should absolutely not consider someone else’s preferences to have any kind of bearing on your life. Will your folks be disappointed? Maybe. But what’s more important, your day-to-day happiness, or the respect you get for going through the motions of a career you hate?
What are you good at? Most people have an innate talent, something that sets them apart from everyone else. Maybe you’re an excellent illustrator, or a gifted singer. Or, you could be a math whiz who understands complex equations perfectly. Whatever that latent skill is in, harness it! You can make it into your career.
Even if you feel like your talent isn’t the most impressive, you’d be surprised at what a bit of practice can do for you. When you’re challenging yourself to get better at something you love, your job is a joy. The satisfaction of doing well and getting paid for it is priceless.
